Team History
Originally formed as Sale Ladies FC and playing in National Division 2, the team ceased to exist in 1997 as Sale FC no longer wished to support a womens rugby team. The players then started to look for a new home and were offered the chance to form a womens team at Atrincham Kersal Rugby Football Club. Delighted to be offered this opportunity, the AKWRFC team was formed and started their first season in 1998 in National Challenge Division 2 North. In the 2003-04 season the team went the whole season unbeaten and were promoted to National Challenge Division 1 North.
In 2007 the RFUW re-structured the leagues. It went from: Premiership 1, Premiership 2, North/Midlands/South-West/South-East 1, Regional Merit Leagues, etc; to Premiership, Championship North/South 1, Championship North/Midlands/South-West/South-East 2, Regional Merit Leagues etc. The outcome for AKWRFC was that although they stayed at the same league level, they were to come up against some new teams.
